A new bike lane will be launched in Mamelodi tomorrow as part of Transport Month.
The 8km-long lane was constructed at a cost of R15 million and runs along Tsamaya Road.
Cyclists representing various stakeholders and the Tshwane Metro Council will take part in a fun cycling event to launch the lane.
The gathering point will be at Mini-Munitoria opposite Solomon Mahlangu Square and the participants will cycle the 8km route along Tsamaya Road, from Dr Ribeiro to Hinterland intersection in Mamelodi.
Construction of the cycle lane began in the 2010/11 financial year as part of the Tsosoloso Programme.
The bike lane is aimed at providing a safe environment for all road users, specifically cyclists, and to promote cycling.
This is in line with the Department of Transport's aim to develop balanced and sustainable rural transport systems by supporting local infrastructure and services involving district municipalities and provincial government.
According to the Tshwane Metro Council, its transport and roads department had developed campaigns and programmes to heighten public awareness around road safety and transport issues.
The national theme for this year's Transport Month is: "Year of job creation and service delivery in the transport sector: Moving South Africa to a better tomorrow".
The municipality will celebrate the Decade of Action in Road Safety in Olievenhoutbosch on October 19 and hold a Transport Indaba at the Metro Police headquarters on October 28.
The indaba will build on last year's indaba and will serve as a platform for discussions by stakeholders and the municipality in a quest to shape the current state of transport in the Tshwane metro area.
